Failure brings Success

Counting all the good things I do makes me a successful Christian right?
I used to think so.   Until the realization that it is God’s Love, Mercy, Grace, and Forgiveness that makes me a “Successful” Christian.
It takes “Failures” in our work, relationships, “religious activities”, even sometimes our health to help us focus on Being a True Christian.

2 Corinthians 12: 9-10 And He has said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness.” Most gladly, therefore, I will rather boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me. 10 Therefore I am well content with weaknesses, with insults, with distresses, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake; for when I am weak, then I am strong.

So instead of counting all the good things I do, what’s important is what I am being.  The list above in the scripture, (weakness, distress, difficulties, on and on) sounds like failures to the world.  Yet that is when God’s power takes over .  Failures bring a  success.  The success of Christ dwelling in you.

Here is a “Cowboy poem” concerning how success made me a failure, but the failures made me  truly successful.

Failures bring Success by Dan Ainsworth

I sit on a tree stump, a primitive church pew

I just got my butt wet, it was covered with dew

But with pen and paper, I’m compelled to not delay

That I share from within, what my heart’s burstin’ to say

Success has caused failure in my journey to see

The True God I long for, and where’s the True me?

I’m reading a book “A Praying Life” by Paul Miller

It’s no epic or saga, nor comedy, nor thriller

But it’s words have hit home, they’ve cut to the quick

A book of spiritual food, this one does the trick

The author shares in his book, a new plan for success,

It’s authenticity, God’s plan all along.

A big word that is,(I had to find how to spell it),

Pains me deeply to realize, I’ve been wrong.

I thought to be successful in this Christian way of life,

Was to count things I do right and do good.

Just keep up with the number of good words and deeds,

and live like ‘man’ thinks that I should.

But God’s plan is simple, “son, just be authentic”

To me what is said is, “Be real!”

And Lo and behold, through a book and men’s prayers,

God’s direction to me is revealed.

Wow! God wants it real!  Hey! I want it real!!

What a RUSH! To be on the same page!!!

He’s taken success, AND taken my failures,

Authenticity…. we are now to engage!!

His healing of my wounds, “open sores” and afflictions,

have left scars that look really gory.

But these brand new tattoos don’t remind me of pains,

but of God’s healing and my Saviour’s own Glory!!

The words, God has changed, He has them reversed,

my story now has a new part,

Reversed words and meanings now come into play,

God is cleansing and mending my heart.

Failures brought success in my journey to see,

The true God I long for, and the true me I’m to BE!

The Comfort of the Fire

What is it about a fire?  We stare at the flames.   Whether a campfire, fireplace, or even just a candle, the dancing of the flame catches our attention.

The Comfort of the Fire

The Comfort of the Fire

You ladies find comfort in the small flame from a candle.  The candlelight dinner, a hot bath with scented candles, both examples of fire being used to change the mood.

Men, we like a big fire. Bar-B-Que fires, fires to grill on, these are a start.  Give us a chance, we’ll set the woods on fire, burn trash piles, or even set abandoned buildings ablaze.   The idea of a bonfire gives a whole new meaning for a get together.  Put a match or lighter in our hands, it’s gonna be lit!

If you want to watch our human nature at work, watch when a man creates/builds his fire.  Whether it’s in the fireplace, or either a campfire, or BBQ he takes pride in how it’s started. He wants to impress everyone (especially himself).   It has to be just right.  Ladies, if you want to start trouble, as if you need encouraging,  just go over and start poking in HIS fire.  Tell him he’s not doing it right.  Sparks will soon be flying from more than just the actual fire!

But once the fire is going, and the arguments of how to best build your fire have passed, we stare.  The dancing of the flames catch our eye.  The heat from the glowing coals warms us.  The smell from a real fire and hearing the crackling and popping sounds gives our senses  a way to connect with this flame.  We connect in some primitive way with this fire.  Our sense of sight, hearing, touch, and smell are in high gear.  What do we do?  We stare.

One thing I’ve noticed also is how a fire brings out honest and REAL communication between people.  You want to have a good honest discussion with friends?  Build a fire. (just don’t poke in the other guys fire or it may get too honest).  Maybe Congress ought to have campfire meetings, instead of committee meetings.

Hebrews 12:29 For our God is a consuming fire.

We can use this fireplace example of fire to help us see God as the consuming fire.  God is a God of unending Love, Mercy, and Forgiveness.  He also is a jealous God (He doesn’t want you to be anywhere else, only with Him).  He is a just and righteous.  He is not a friend to sin.  His Holiness is pure.  In other words, the wicked and sin itself will be consumed.

God loves us.  We need to show our love to Him by avoiding sin.  That same fire that gives us comfort can also burn us if we don’t give it respect.   I’d rather receive God’s comfort and warmth, than his wrath.

So ask God to help you with the sin that comes between you and Him.  Throw another log on the fire.  Let that log be the sins that come between you and God.  Better that the sin is what’s being thrown into the fire, than you along with it.

Now stoke up the fire a little bit.  Throw another hickory log(sin) on the fire.   Share this warmth and comfort with others.  and remember…… don’t poke around in another man’s fire.    See Ya!!

Why do we flinch?

Why do we flinch?  Whether from the gun or from God, we flinch because of fear.  We have power from the gun, but we flinch because of this power.  We have this awesome God, yet we “flinch” when around His power. Watch this 10 second video. (Then, come back to read my excuse.)  I am an experienced black powder hunter. But watch as I flinch.  I know not to do it.  It causes me to miss.

My excuse?…… The cap explodes right in my face a split second before the gun bellows out a bullet headed for the target.  That’s the fun of a muzzleloader!!  The fear of the gun’s recoil/the kick, the loud noise, even the fear of me missing, causes me to flinch.  The fear of missing the shot, actually makes me miss!

Psalms 125:1 NIV Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever.

How do you “flinch” in your Christian walk.  Let me share a few examples.    Why pray, it won’t do any good.(flinch)  I’m seeking God’s will for my life, but……(flinch)  I’m as much afraid(flinch) of God answering my prayer, as I am that He won’t hear my prayer(flinch).  See? If you and I can be totally honest, we have way too much fear/doubt/unbelief(flinching) in our relationship with Christ.  Our fear/doubt/unbelief(flinching), actually causes us to miss out on God’s promises!

If I trust in the gun, I don’t allow my fears to cause me to flinch. I don’t shake or twitch. I am solid.

If I trust in the Lord, with His Help, I don’t allow my fears to cause me to flinch. I am solid.

Our heavenly Father has His Power and His Love that He promises to give us.  We  flinch at every encounter we have with Him.  What is so amazing about this awesome God with His power, is that He freely gives to each of us.  He will even help with your flinching.  Just ask Him!

Lord, help me to use this power for Your Glory. And Lord, help me with my fears, doubts, unbeliefs (flinching).  I want to be solid.  Bullseye!
